Wood floors and Hawaii humidity can be a bad combination — buckled boards, adhesive failure, mold under the planks. We've seen what happens when it's done wrong. We've been preventing it since 1973.
Engineered hardwood has a genuine wood veneer top layer bonded to a dimensionally stable core. That core is what makes it viable in Hawaii. Solid wood expands and contracts dramatically with humidity swings — leading to cupping, buckling, and gapping. Engineered hardwood moves a fraction of that.
Over concrete slab — how the majority of Maui homes are built — engineered hardwood with a proper vapor barrier is the right approach. It refinishes like solid wood, looks like solid wood, and holds up where solid wood would fail.
Laminate gives you the visual richness of wood floors at a significantly lower cost. Modern laminate looks remarkably real — embossed textures, realistic graining, wide range of colors. One important note: not all laminate is appropriate for Hawaii's humidity. We only work with products rated for high-humidity environments.
Laminate is a smart choice for bedrooms, interior spaces, and rental properties where budget matters. We'll be straight with you about where it works well — and where LVP is the better call.
Most wood floor failures in Hawaii come down to two things: the wrong product, or skipped steps during installation. Before we lay a single plank, we test the subfloor for moisture — because even small amounts of moisture vapor rising through a concrete slab can destroy a wood floor from below. Then we acclimate the material to your specific space, sometimes for a week or more, until it's in equilibrium with your home's conditions.
Some installers skip both steps. We don't. A floor that fails six months after installation isn't something we're willing to put our name on — and we've been putting our name on floors across Maui since 1973.
