Our Story

Mel Pomroy was 25 years old when he left Oahu and arrived on Maui in 1971. He fell in love with the Valley Isle β€” its red dirt roads, its trade winds, its people, and its spirit. Two years later, in January 1973, he opened Kahului Carpet & Drapery, Inc., building it from the ground up with his own hands, his own reputation, and a set of values that have never changed: pride, service, and aloha.

For over 50 years, Mel and his ohana have served the people of Maui β€” from the first homes going up in Central Maui, to the resorts along the coast, to the schools where Maui's children learn and grow. His daughter Michele Pomroy Fraser now serves as Director of Operations, carrying that same aloha spirit into a new generation.

Mel has also been a longtime pillar of Maui's golf community. In the 1980s, alongside fellow Maui legend Charlie Aruda, he helped revive and sustain the historic Maui Open β€” originally founded in 1952 as the Maui Invitational β€” and has supported and organized local golf tournaments for decades. For Mel, golf was never just a game. It was another way to give back to the island that gave him everything.

Today, Kahului Carpet & Drapery is licensed statewide and operates under DBA Olona Solutions, offering flooring, window coverings, and building solutions across Hawaii. Our showroom remains proudly located in the historic Old Kahului Shopping Center β€” a place that has been the heart of Kahului for generations.

The Old Kahului Shopping Center

When Mel arrived on Maui in 1965, the Kahului Shopping Center was already the beating heart of Central Maui. Ah Fook's Supermarket β€” started by Chinese immigrant Tam Ah Fook and a beloved community institution for generations β€” anchored the center for over a century. Years later, Mel's own daughter Michele would purchase that very store, renaming it Maui Style Market, weaving the Pomroy family even deeper into Kahului's story. Today it carries on as Kelly's Superette. We are proud to call the Old Kahului Shopping Center home β€” then, now, and always.

The Cane Fields & A Young Man's Maui

In 1971, a 25-year-old Mel Pomroy stepped off the plane from Oahu and into a Maui that smelled like red dirt, sugarcane, and salt air. The HC&S plantation cane fields stretched from the mountains to the sea. Kahului was a tight-knit plantation town where everybody knew everybody and a handshake still meant something. It was love at first sight β€” and Mel never left.

The Kahului Railroad & The Spirit of Hard Work

The Kahului Railroad was the lifeline of plantation-era Maui β€” hauling sugarcane from the fields to the harbor, connecting communities across the island. By the time Mel opened his doors in January 1973, the railroad had already faded into cherished memory. But its spirit β€” hard work, reliability, community pride β€” lived on in every Maui business that followed. Kahului Carpet & Drapery was built on exactly those values.

January 1973 β€” A Promise Made

January 1973. Mel Pomroy opened Kahului Carpet & Drapery with a simple promise: do good work, treat people right, and bring aloha to every single job. Maui was growing. New homes were going up. Families were putting down roots. And Mel was right there β€” on his hands and knees β€” making sure their floors were something to be proud of. Over 50 years later, that promise hasn't changed one bit.
